The Waterfront Restaurant, Anna Maria Island, Florida

Unlike a road trip this was more of a joy ride where we jumped in the car without any idea of where we were going or if there would be anything worthwhile to do or see when we got there. It could have been an oasis or a disaster. So one afternoon we decided to head south from Tampa towards the water thinking that there must be some nice beaches along the way.

We ended up on the island of Anna Maria and stopped at the town pier. Needless to say this is a beautiful spot as you can see below. According to one of the locals I talked to there are Manatee's right offshore and for those lucky scuba divers they can swim right along with these gentle giants.

Walking around there is a cute shopping area near the pier and we started thinking about lunch. In front right nearby was the Waterfront Restaurant. Since my wife loves eating on the water this seemed ideal to satisfy our hunger pains.

Nothing like a cool Margarita on a hot day.

Our waitress had a couple of seafood suggestions. First the crab cake sandwich:

Served with summer slaw and a mustard dressing this was exquisite. All meat and the spread complemented the crab perfectly.

My wife selected the fish tacos:

After sampling some I had to agree that these were amazing because the fish was well seasoned.

A little later we headed south on Gulf drive to the town of Bradenton, stopping to walk on the beach and dip our toes in the water. With more cute shops and watering holes you should stop here.

Suddenly, an oasis in the distance, Joe's Eats & Sweets.

We walked in and saw the sign, all ice cream made on premises. That's all we needed to see and ordered up a couple of sundaes. A must stop for any New Englander who loves ice cream or anyone else for that matter.
